EDITOR'S LETTER

So, this is my good-bye and I may as well be trite– good-bye, it’s been real, I loved working on this magazine, I am grateful that I will still be able to work on it, (and happy that I am not in charge anymore). I should say something poetic about passing the torch and I probably could if I tried, (since I used to be a creative writing major), but I can’t. I can only say that each person into whose hands this magazine has fallen has brought something to it, some part of themselves that they wanted to share in order to help this zine to grow, and it will continue to grow. In Sarah’s hands 51% will expand in wonderful artistic ways. So, it’s been a good time, full of learning experiences, mistakes, and good intentions. And no matter what we call it, I am proud to have been a part of this zine.

Anna

I am going to introduce myself because it seems there is no other way to begin this relationship that will take place solely on paper for the next few months. I am Sarah, the new co-editor of 51%, a Feminist Zine.

As an aside... I wanted to change the name to Bon-Bon, A Feminist Zine.

"But Bon-Bons have NO nutritional value," Lee said.

"No, but they are delicious little chocolate covered treats that tantalize the tastebuds and delight the soul," I replied.

... she didn’t buy it.

So here I am as editor of a little zine whose name doesn’t fit quite right, but whose contents will soon feel like a second skin.

There are some changes I’d like to make during my stint as editor. I plan to build on 51%’s history as a zine created by strong, powerful women and their male allies, devoted to equality, diversity and a general compassion that is shown through a willingness to stand up for those who cannot stand themselves. I want to get the zine up to date, to include more fiction and creative work, more talented voices that are able to expose their passions through the written word, and to give the zine a little touch of bad-ass pizzaz!

But it’s going to take some time, a lot of work, and some damn fine contributions from all of you dedicated readers.

So that’s my quip this first time as editor - that’s my pitch, my turn-on, my invite ... come write for us. Help us to turn this into the best damn zine ever seen.

Sarah
