IT'S A
MAJOR!! UMF now offers a Bachelor of Arts in Women’s Studies. The program examines the lives of women and uses gender as a critical lense to look at the roles, contributions and experiences of women in our society. The program emphasizes community involvement with such groups as FACES (Farmington Area Citizens to End Sweatshops), Girl Talk (an enrichment program to broaden rural 5th and 6th grade girls’ experiences), the Maine Women’s Lobby, Abused Women’s Advocacy Project, and also over-see the publication of the feminist magazine 51%. This major prepares students for various careers or graduate studies in such diverse fields as education, law, business, women’s studies, public policy, and government through the development of critical thinking, communication, problem solving and analytical skills.
