Ancient legends shrouded in the mists of time. . . claim that Ultimate at Farmington began in the early 90’s when Rob Horne tried to start a club here at UMF.
The current installment of Beaver Ultimate began during the Spring semester of 1997, started by Bill Rafuse. Discs have now been flying for 10 years. In the Fall of ‘97 a group of friends traveled to Connecticut College where they played at their first tournament.
In the Spring of ‘98 we were officially recognized by the college as a club sport. What started as a small group of friends has become one of the many club sports on campus. We are a student run organization always looking to attract new members, both men and women. We travel far and play most weekends. In the past, we have traveled to our neighboring schools in Maine and also out of state to represent UMF in Montreal, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Pennsylvania. Following the current trend of Ultimate, our club has grown and we have played many competitive games against New England schools, with a few Canadians included. Each fall we host the Beaver Bash, a tournament located here in Farmington. Teams come from as far as Vermont and New York to play.
We are a young team with experienced leaders and have been steadily improving over the past four years. In the Springs of '00 and ‘03 the men's team was just a few points away from going to College Regionals. In the Springs of ‘01, ‘04, and ‘05 we made it to College Regionals with a team of dedicated players. The women's team has also been very successful, making it to College Regionals for the past three years. In the Fall of ’06, UMF made it’s first appearance at the North East Club Mixed Regional Tournament, where we faced off against the top Co-Ed teams in the Northeast. With increased commitment from the players and an ever-growing crop of incoming talented players, the Beavers are always progressing and striving to establish ourselves as, not only the winningest team on the UMF campus, but also a force in Ultimate in New England.
